A medium to large size, auriculate, fluted, lanceolate point with a concave base that is ground. Most examples are fluted on both sides about 1/3 the way up from the base. Clovis is the earliest known point type in the hemisphere. The first Clovis find associated with Mastodons was in 1979 at Mastodon State Park, Jefferson Co., MO. in the Kimmswick bone bed dated to 11,500 B.P. The origin of Clovis is a mystery as there is no pre-Clovis evidence here (crude forms that pre-date Clovis).
