Description:
Early knives are strongly shouldered and have one, two or no flutes. Flutes vary in length, but usually pass the shoulders into the blade. Stems are ground or smoothed into the shoulders and stem sides are incurvate to straight, rarely contracting. Most, but not all, bases have delicate auricles, giving these points the nickname "fishtail." There is a small or unfluted, basally thinned variety made on spalled flakes, that can be flat on one or both sides, with minimal retouch edge alignment.
